Fate is my new best friend

I was up in the Bay Area over the weekend hanging out with my family. When I left for my trip, I had plans with a friend of mine to get together for dinner when I got back into town. Since I would be getting in around dinner time, I figured that he could pick me up from the airport and we could go out to eat from there. Late Sunday afternoon (the day I was supposed to return), I got a call from my friend saying that he couldn't get together for dinner because he was going to go to the Radiohead concert. Damn, there went my ride. I wasn't too worried, because I had had a backup lined up. I gave Friend#2 a call and he assured me that it wouldn't be a problem. 15 minutes later, Friend#2 called back and said he could no longer pick me up because he had decided to go to the Radiohead concert as well. Crap. My last attempt was to contact #1Wingman, but he too was attending the night's concert. At this point, I just decided that I would take a cab home from the airport.

Before my flight home, I was sitting in the airport with my parents (who were on another flight leaving around the same time). A couple rows away, there was an attractive blond standing, facing us, that caught both my eye and my father's. From where we sat, she appeared to have a very nice body. Printed on her taut shirt was the word "West." After we had both sufficiently checked her out, my father leaned towards me and said, "we've seen the west side, now let's have a look at the east side." Rare to see my father in such witty form, I couldn't help but laugh.

I got on the plane and took a window seat in a row with an older woman on the aisle and an empty seat between us. As the plane filled up, the seat between us remained empty, that is, until Ms. West made her way down the aisle and sat herself down in it. Not wanting to seem too eager, I thumbed through the ever-present airplane publications rag placed in the seatback in front of me and let a little tension hang in the air before I started up a conversation. During the course of our talk, I found out that Ms. West lived but a few blocks away from me. Perfect, I thought to myself, I think I just found my ride home.

As we were touching down, I began to weave my tale of woe about how my Radiohead-loving friends had left me high and dry for the concert and how I was hoping that I'd be able to get in touch with someone when we landed or I'd have to take a taxi home. Without missing a beat, she countered with, "well, you really shouldn't take a cab home; my roommate is coming to pick me up and we can just give you a ride." We all know my policy regarding turning down attractive women, so I graciously accepted.

The roommate was running a little late and the two of us ended up standing on the curb for a while, waiting. When she finally did show up, The Roommate proved to be just as hot as Ms. West. I couldn't help but smile, dumbfounded by how well my night was going. Unfortunately, The Roommate's driving wasn't nearly as good as her looks, so I spent most of the ride home praying for my safe deliverance. Again, luck continued to be on my side and we made it back to my place in one piece. I thanked the girls for the ride and collected phone numbers from each of them, as well as inviting them out in the near future for drinks as a measure of my thanks. Ah, life is good.
